Question 1

What is PTA Tax and why do I need to pay it?

Accepted Answer

PTA Tax is a duty imposed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority on mobile devices imported into Pakistan. It ensures the device is legally registered and can operate on local cellular networks.

Question 2

How is the PTA Tax calculated?

Accepted Answer

The tax amount depends on the device's value and category (e.g., smart phone, feature phone) as determined by FBR. There are different rates for registration via Passport (for travelers) vs. CNIC (for general public).

Question 3

Is there a difference in tax for Passport vs. CNIC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Typically, registration on a Passport (for international travelers within 60 days of arrival) incurs a lower tax rate compared to registration on a CNIC. However, rules and slabs can change, so always check the latest rates.

Question 4

How can I pay the PTA Tax?

Accepted Answer

You can pay via online banking, ATMs, or at branches of major banks in Pakistan using the PSID generated from the DIRBS system. You can also generate the PSID by dialing *8484#.

Question 5

What happens if I don't pay the PTA Tax?

Accepted Answer

If the tax is not paid within the allowed grace period (usually 60 days for SIM-based devices), the device's IMEI will be blocked, and it will not work with Pakistani SIM cards.

Question 6

Can I use my phone on Wi-Fi without paying tax?

Accepted Answer

Yes, even if your phone's IMEI is blocked for cellular services, you can still use Wi-Fi and other non-cellular features like apps, camera, and games.

Question 7

Are the tax rates the same for all phones?

Accepted Answer

No, tax rates vary significantly based on the market price of the phone. High-end flagship phones attract higher taxes compared to budget or mid-range devices.
