Who must pay Zakat?
- Adult, sane Muslim who owns wealth above the nisab.
- Assets held for one lunar year (hawl) such as cash, trade goods, gold/silver, and liquid investments.
- Net of immediate liabilities due within the zakat year.
Primary recipients (Qur’an 9:60)
The poor with insufficient means.

Zakatable assets & liabilities by Fiqh
- Cash, trade goods, gold and silver, livestock, and business assets held for trade are zakatable.
- Personal items (home, car, clothing) are not zakatable; deduct short‑term debts.
- Cash, gold/silver, and trade stock are zakatable; intention and hawl apply.
- Non‑trade personal assets not zakatable; deduct due debts within the year.
